Overcoming With Jesus: A Special Message for Kids

Have you ever had a day when you knew the right thing to do…but you didn’t want to do it? Maybe a friend said something unkind, and you wanted to snap back. Maybe you were tempted to tell a lie so you wouldn’t get in trouble. Or maybe you just felt discouraged—like you’d never be good enough.

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone. Everyone has struggled with these things. Jesus wrote some special messages to the seven churches in Revelation, and the people in each church had something difficult they needed to overcome. The best news is this – every time Jesus talked about overcoming, he also promised to give his people strength, help, and victory.

And guess what? Those promises are for you too.

Overcoming Means Victory In Jesus

In Revelation, Jesus told his people over and over, “To him who overcomes…” (Revelation 2–3). Overcoming means choosing God’s way instead of our own selfish ways. It means learning to listen to God’s voice and trust in him so much that his strength becomes your strength.

Jesus never asks us to overcome all by ourselves. That would be impossible! Instead, he gives us the greatest helper of all, the holy spirit.

The Holy Spirit lives with you and works in your heart to help you say no to temptation and choose what’s right. God’s spirit also gives you power to overcome through Jesus.

Jesus said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8). Think about that—POWER! God gives you heavenly power to live for him every day. That’s a real superpower!

What Are Kids Overcoming Today?

Kids today face real struggles. You you recognize any of these struggles?

  • Feeling left out at school
  • Being tempted to hide the truth from parents
  • Jealousy because a friend has something you want
  • Fear about things happening in the world
  • Anger when things don’t go your way
  • Comparing yourself to others and feeling “not good enough”

The devil wants you to believe lies like:

  • “You’re alone.”
  • “You can’t ever change.”
  • “No one cares about you.”
  • “You’ll never be strong enough.”

But God has given you something powerful to fight those lies: His Word—the Bible!

In Revelation, John sees a vision of the Son of Man. This man shining like the sun, has a sword coming out of his mouth.  That sword represents the Word of God (see Ephesians 6:17). When you open your Bible, think of it as your best weapon. When you memorize Bible verses it’s like holding a sharp shining sword that cuts down the enemy’s lies.

Using Gods Word as Your Sword

Here are some Bible promises you can use when you face obstacles and need power to overcome.

When you feel weak:
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” —Philippians 4:13
Jesus gives you strength when you don’t feel strong enough.

When you feel afraid:
Fear not, for I am with you.” —Isaiah 41:10
You never fight battles alone. God is right beside you.

When you feel tempted to do wrong:
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” —Psalm 119:11
God’s Word helps you say no to sin.

When you feel unloved or not good enough:
Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” —1 John 3:1
You are loved more than you can imagine.

You Dont Overcome By Being Good Enough”

Sometimes we think overcoming means never messing up. But Jesus didn’t ask the churches to never make a mistake—He asked them to trust Him. You overcome by holding onto Jesus and his righteousness.

His righteousness means Jesus goodness counts for you. When you accept Jesus as your savior, God sees you covered in the perfect life of his Son. And when you fall, Jesus gently lifts you up, forgives you, and helps you try again.

Overcomers Are Just Kids Who Keep Choosing Jesus

Every time you pray, every time you choose honesty, kindness, courage, or obedience—even when it’s hard—you are overcoming in Jesus’ strength. The Holy Spirit is helping you grow into someone who reflects God’s love.

Jesus ended each message to the churches with promises—crowns, white robes, a new name, a place with Him forever. He gives those same promises to you today.

So, stand up tall and hold on tight to your sword – God’s word.

And remember – Jesus said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” -Matthew 28:20

He will help you live the life of an overcomer.
